On the Faculty of Sciences’ website there is all the of the information regarding which courses are running, as well as their respective course objectives, areas of specialisation, scientific coordinators, required qualifications, places, fees, general regulatory rules, contact information and responsible entities.
Who can apply for a Doctorate Programme?
According to the Regulations of Postgraduate Studies, students can apply for a Doctorate Programme if they have the following:
a) A Master’s degree or its legal equivalent;
b) Those wo have "Licenciatura" degree and particularly relevant academic/scientific work experience, by which the candidate can be recognised as being able to complete this study programme by the FCUL Scientific Council;
c) Exceptionally, those candidates who have academic/scientific work experience, by which the candidate can be recognised as being able to complete this study programme by the FCUL Scientific Council.
Note: The recognition referred in b) and c) is done by analysing the candidates’ previous experience(s) in the context of the doctorate programme they apply to. However, this does not recognise/award them with the equivalent of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree.
Which documents do I need to attach to my application?
Applications must be made online and must include the following documents:
- Curriculum Vitae;
- Certificate of Completion/ Master’s Diploma 1 2 3 and/or Bachelor's degree 1 2 3;
- Legal equivalence 4 of a Master's and/or Bachelor's degree (for applicants whose degree has been obtained in a foreign institution);
- Master’s grade certificates 1 2 3 and/or "Licenciatura" grade certificates 1 2 3;
- Certificate of Syllabus and Workload of the concluded subjects (only applicable to students whose degree is from a foreign institution) if requested by the coordinator of the course 2 3;
- Identification document: Passport, Identity Card (optional) 3;
- Cover letter;
- Work plan indicating the general objectives to be achieved (optional);
- Declaration of acceptance from the selected supervisor(s).
1 Candidates whose Master’s degree or legal equivalent is from a foreign institution (outside of the EU), must certify all certificates and diplomas at the Portuguese consular services or make sure that they have the Apostille (Hague Convention) by the competent authority of the state from which the documents are originated.
2 Whenever the certificates or diploma are not originally written in Portuguese, English, French or Spanish, they must be translated into one of these languages.
3 Candidates who are not FCUL students should bring the original documents to the enrolment day.
4 The recognition of qualifications provided for in the Decree-Law no. 66/2018, from 16th of August, as well as the degrees recognized or that have already been considered equivalents by the previous legislation (Decree-Law no. 283/83 from 21st June, and Decree-law no. 341/2007 from 12th October).
Which type of CV is preferred for my application?
The candidate can send the comprehensive or summarised version of the CV provided that it mentions his/her professional and academic qualifications and training.
Candidates must not send the original copies of their certificate(s). However, during the enrolment process they must physically come to the FCUL Postgraduate Studies Area in order to prove that they have the original documents so that the authenticity of the scanned document(s) sent as part of the application can be confirmed
How many supervisors can I have?
Your supervisor must have a PhD. In addition, in duly justified cases, we can assign a maximum of two co-supervisors to ensure a better disciplinary or institutional framework for the proposed research project.
How much is the application fee?
The application fee is €50.00.
How do I submit my application?
The whole procedure is completed online. You must fill in the form and submit it with the required documents duly scanned.
It is possible to submit an application without all the requested documents?
No. Applications which do not have all the necessary documents will not be accepted.
How can I pay the application fee?
The payment of the application fee must be done once you have received the corresponding email issued by the Postgraduate Studies Area. The payment can be made using two different methods:
- ATM reference;
- Bank transfer.
If you intend to pay the application fee via bank transfer, then you must submit your proof of payment with the application.
Payments must be made during the respective application period and immediately after submitting it (payments will not be accepted during the 1st period to pay for applications submitted in the 2nd period).
Can I pay the application fee after submitting the application?
Applications will not be accepted without the proof of payment of the application fee..
Is the application fee refundable?
The application fee is non-refundable.
Where can I consult the applications results?
The application results will be available online.
The dates for enrolment for accepted candidates will be available on www.ciencias.ulisboa.pt.
