Since the 1970s, model theory has been developing a rich classification theory of general mathematical structures based on logical properties of formal theories describing the structures. It has been found that structures of algebraic geometry occupy a central position in the emerging classification scheme. Further detalisation of this central part of the classification scheme lead to a discovery of a fundamental general construction (Hrushovski) which allows to link together structures of algebraic type to structures of analytic nature. In terms of concrete mathematics, this link takes a form very similar to Grothendieck's period conjecture and its variations.
