Abstract: On his doctoral thesis about trigonometric series, Bernard Riemann introduced a notion of generalized second derivative which was relevant to prove his uniqueness theorem of trigonometric expansions. The purpose of this talk is to characterize locally minimal surfaces in terms of those generalized harmonic functions.

Abstract: Given a finitely generated group F and a complex reductive Lie group G, the G-character variety of F, denoted $X_F G=Hom(F,G)//G$, is typically a singular algebraic variety with interesting geometric and topological properties and appears in many contexts within Mathematical-Physics.

Francisco Gomes Teixeira (1851-1933) was a remarkable Portuguese mathematician, one of the greatest of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and certainly the most prolific in that period. He maintained regular and intense correspondence with the greatest mathematicians of his time. In this lecture we will present some aspects of this correspondence.
