Ria Formosa is a rich and diverse coastal environment, and a unique place for studying and understanding coastal landforms and the services they provide. This course will provide hands-on training in geosciences focusing on coastal geosystem services and how these are affected by the changing coastal environment.
Students will make in-situ observations, collect data and conduct analysis to investigate how barrier island resilience and carbon sequestration by saltmarshes impact society, considering past and future trends. By performing hands-on activities, students will learn about ecosystem services from a geosciences perspective, whilst acquiring skills in state-of-the-art field and lab equipment and techniques. Courses will be taught by recognized researchers from the Universities of Lisbon and Algarve, the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere, as well as invited experts.
