Statistical and methodological issues in clinical trials

Experience from the regulatory setting for medicines and medical devices

Sala 6.4.31, FCUL, Lisboa

Por Inês Antunes Reis (Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency).

Abstract: In Europe, medicines are regulated by national (and one European) regulatory agencies. In order to introduce a new medicine into the market, drug manufacturers must apply for a license (marketing authorisation) for that medicine. Marketing authorisation applications (MAAs) are usually supported by a number of clinical studies, with the aim of demonstrating safety and efficacy of the product and ensuring that its risk-benefit is positive. In parallel with clinical (and other) aspects of these trials, it is extremely important to ensure the studies are planned and conducted following appropriate statistical methodology, so that their results can be trusted. A biostatistician is, therefore, an essential member of a multidisciplinary team assessing MAAs.

Objectives: To introduce participants to the details of communicating science to non-specialized audiences, including, but not exclusive to, public and private stakeholders, students and teachers, and media professionals.

Objectives: Natural history museums are privileged spaces for seminal research on different subjects of biological sciences such as biodiversity, evolution, ecology, biogeography and taxonomy.

Objectives: Provide students with basic workflows, platforms and tools to increase reproducibility at all scientific levels.

Objectives: Under the general framework of Global Change Ecology, the goal of this course is to provide the participants with the most recent and practical knowledge on the use of Functional Diversity.

Objectives: The objective of this course is to introduce participants to the details of communication and writing scientific publications. The main emphasis is on the most common form, the “primary scientific paper”, but other forms will be covered.
