Machine learning is a field of computer science that aims to develop computational systems that are able to change their actions according to the operational environment, without requiring explicit programming of those actions. This is achieved by means of algorithms and techniques able to learn from data, that are employed to construct models. These in turn may be used afterwards to generate predictions or making decisions as the system evolves. Over the last couple of decades the basic machine learning algorithms and techniques have evolved rapidly, boosted by the desire to improve this science and by a tremendous growth in application domains. This talk will provide a brief introduction to the machine learning field as well as to some of its main algorithms and techniques, and present example applications to problems arising in domains relevant to the DEGGE.
