Abstract: We present recent results on a free boundary problem for an inhomogeneous operator with nonstandard growth. This operator has been used in the modelling of electrorheological fluids and in image processing. We obtain free boundary regularity results for weak solutions and we apply these results to minimizers of suitable energy functionals.

Abstract: Various models at large strains will be surveyed and mathematical difficulties will be highlighted to show that a lot of fundamental problems still remain open. Nevertheless, some results are available in particular if the concept of nonsimple materials is addopted, both in the static, quasistatic, and dynamical situations.

Abstract: On his doctoral thesis about trigonometric series, Bernard Riemann introduced a notion of generalized second derivative which was relevant to prove his uniqueness theorem of trigonometric expansions. The purpose of this talk is to characterize locally minimal surfaces in terms of those generalized harmonic functions.
