Statistics applied to fisheries - two case studies

Sala 6.2.44, Ciências ULisboa

Por Iúri Correia (DEIO, Ciências ULisboa).

Statistical methodologies have a very wide range of applications. With the increasing influx of data along with the need of detailed and robust information to aid decision making processes, statistical analyses are a great guide for the unseen. Here, two short case studies related with Portuguese fisheries will be presented. The first involves estimating the spatial distribution of Raja undulata along the southeast coast of Portugal. A marked point process spatial model was fitted resorting to INLA. The second case study will concern about studying the long-term population dynamics of the Pagellus bogaraveo. Through simulation starting from observed data, one can better understand different scenarios depending on the parameters, namely the survival probability and the fishing pressure.

Bio: Iúri J. F. Correia is a Biostatistician MSc with a Biology degree. His main interests lie within the application of statistical methodologies overall, especially with spatial statistics and environment. Learning and teaching are two concepts that have been constantly in sight during his academic career as well as in the future. Previous work with the Centre of Statistics and its Applications led him to currently pursue a Statistics and Probability PhD student at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon.
