An overview of medical microwave imaging

Sala 1.4.14, FCUL, Lisboa

Por Raquel Conceição (Instituto de Biofísica e Engenharia Biomédica, Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa).

Abstract: In this talk, I will start by giving some context of MicroWave Imaging (MWI) in the context of other modalities for medical imaging. I will explain the motivation for yet another modality of medical imaging and will further describe how a general confocal MWI system operates. This includes discussing several electromagnetic modelling techniques, signals processing algorithms for artifact removal and beamforming, image formation and classification algorithms for diagnosis. I will give examples of applications of medical MWI, for example breast cancer detection or brain stroke detection, and briefly present some of the MWI prototypes which have been developed around the world and information on some clinical trials. I will briefly mention some European projects that have been funded in this area – in particular the one I led, COST Action TD1301 MiMed, and provide links and books where more information can be obtained.

Short bio: Raquel C. Conceição is an Assistant Professor in Lisbon, Portugal. She holds a PhD in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and a Masters in Biomedical Engineering, in 2011 and 2007, respectively. She has over 10 years of research experience on the topic of Microwave Imaging, developing techniques to detect and classify breast cancer. She was the chair of COST Action TD1301 (Microwave Medical Applications, MiMed), a network of over 250 research and medical participants from 30 countries. She edited 2 books from Springer (“An Introduction to Microwave Imaging for Breast Cancer Detection” and “Emerging Electromagnetic Technologies for Brain Diseases Diagnostics and Monitoring”), published 16 journal papers and 34 conference papers. Also, she has been awarded the ANACOM URSI Portugal prize in 2013 and URSI Young Scientist in 2014, 2017 and 2018, among other prizes and awards.
