The X-ARAPUCA is a novel technology for the detection of scintillation light, used in current liquid argon detectors. The word arapuca refers to a rudimentar bird trap built by brazilian natives, which illustrates the principle behind the X-ARAPUCA: photons are trapped inside the system, increasing the probability of detection by a silicon photomultiplier. The trapping happens due to a clever combination of wavelength shifters and a dichroic filter, designed by Ana Amelia Machado and Ettore Segreto, which deservely granted them the 2019 APS Instrumentation Early Career Award. In this presentation we explore the principles behind the X-ARAPUCA and its current application on SBND and on DUNE's far detectors.
