Persistent homology is an algebraic tool for quantifying topological featuresof shapes and functions, which has recently found wide applications in data and shape analysis. In the first part of this talk, I aim to present the underlying algebraic ideas and basic concepts of this very active field of research. In the second part I sketch an application in digital image analysis.
