In 2015, the Lisbon Municipality (CML) marked the 260th anniversary of the earthquake that devastated the city, with several activities integrated in the programme called “Lisbon City + Resilient + Safe – 260 years of the 1755 earthquake”.

The initiative belongs to the “100 Resilient Cities” programme, promoted by the Rockefeller Foundation and that is dedicated to helping cities improve their response to natural catastrophes, climate change or social challenges.  In December 2014, the Portuguese capital was one of 35 cities chosen to integrate a group of 100 Resilient Cities that will be supported by the Rockefeller Foundation. In addition to Lisbon, the network already includes cities such as Barcelona, London, Paris, Milan, Boston, Chicago, Sidney, Singapore, Los Angeles, New York, Rio de Janeiro and Rome.

The Earth Shakes

The Earth Shakes (https://www.aterratreme.pt) is a preparation and self-protection exercise for seismic risk that lasts one minute and in which any citizen can participate, either individually or in group. This initiative has an informative and educational character that raises awareness for risk prevention and proper action in the case of an earthquake, disseminating prevention procedures, self-protection and mitigation against seismic risk.
