Welcome to the Department of Informatics

The Department of Informatics (DI) at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL) is responsible for specialized courses in the area of informatics, across all three cycles of higher education: undergraduate, Master’s and PhD. This area has a long tradition at FCUL, spanning more than three decades, since the launch of a pioneering course in Computer Science in 1982.

Each year, more than 170 new students are admitted to the first cycle programmes in Informatics Engineering and Information Technology. The Master’s in Informatics Engineering provides comprehensive training in the field and is accredited with the professional title of Engineer. The Master’s in Informatics is designed to offer complementary training in informatics for non-engineers. The Master's degrees in Computer Security, Data Science, and Bioinformatics and Computational Biology are pioneering programmes in Portugal, standing at the forefront of highly specialized and rapidly growing areas. In the third cycle, the PhD in Informatics is the the main avenue for advanced research training. The Department is also involved in several other interdisciplinary Master’s and PhD programmes offered across the University of Lisbon.

Over the years, the Department’s action plan has been characterized by an intense collaboration with companies and other external organizations, yielding mutually beneficial results. According to the most recent figures published by independent entities, our students enjoy an employability rate close to 100%, with full employment in most cases. Internship opportunities consistently and largely exceed the number of Master’s finalists, ensuring a privileged entry point into the labour market. Every year, several awards are granted to the best applicants and students in undergraduate and Master’s programmes, in cooperation with companies such as Accenture, MAXDATA, and Doutor Finanças, thereby encouraging demand and rewarding the achievement of excellence.

The department’s faculty are integrated into two scientific research units accredited by the national Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), as well as an autonomous research group, all of which with a strong connection to postgraduate training. These units promote interdisciplinary initiatives stemming from our partnerships with leading information technology companies and foster close collaborations with other schools and departments, both within the University of Lisbon and with other universities at the national and international levels.

We are located at Cidade Universitária, one of the best places for an academic career, offering spacious grounds, sports facilities, and a privileged location with easy access to all of Lisbon.

In summary, the Department provides its more than 1000 students with a solid education in the field of Informatics, with a cutting-edge curriculum supported by high quality scientific research and close collaborations with the business ecosystem.
