Geographic Engineering, Geophysics and Energy

Welcome to the Department of Geographic Engineering, Geophysics and Energy

Mission

The mission of The Department of Geographic Engineering, Geophysics and Energy (DEGGE) is the knowledge development of a changing planet earth.

We prepare the future professionals and specialists in the areas of energy, sustainable development, geospatial information and earth sciences.

Areas of Expertise

To fulfill its mission DEGGE combines the scientific and pedagogic competencies in the areas of Renewable Energies / Energy Efficiency, Geophysics and Geospatial Information, seeking the training of professionals, namely with an engineering profile in the energy field to have the capacity to solve complex problems that involve environmental problems, energy systems and energy efficiency which are of paramount importance in the 21st century.

The shortage of fossil energy resources and the impacts of climate change are in the international agenda, and lead to both funding and human resources increase to search for solutions towards their resolution, as one can see by the employment perspectives related with renewable energy.  At DEGGE (Bachelor and Master Programmes in Energy and Environment Engineering) you can acquire the skills to develop projects related to energy production through the use of renewable sources with a special focus on photovoltaic, wind power and in the area of efficient use of energy, namely in buildings in sustainable way.  The laboratories of DEGGE will give you an experimental training in both equipment and processes you will find in your professional life.

Climate change in different spatial and temporal scales is the object of study at DEGGE (Geophysical Sciences) through the development of numerical models to forecast the weather, ocean circulation models and the atmosphere-ocean interaction.  The Physics of the Earth and knowledge about the Earth’s internal structure are the object of study and research in the field of Internal Geophysics, where the domains of natural resources, natural risks (seismic, volcanic and tsunamis) are also addressed.

The space component, observation satellites from earth, are DEGGE’s means of mass acquisition of data on earth, whether for the monitoring of natural disasters, climate change, weather forecasting or the localization of goods and services.  At DEGGE you can learn to deal with spatial data in its different dimensions of representation and visualization within the scope of Geospatial Engineering.

Teaching and Research

The teachers of DEGGE are also scientists that carry their research activities in the research center - Institute D. Luiz - IDL (an Associate Laboratory of FCT). This strong connection contributes to a permanent update of teaching subjects and enhance the link between students and research.
