Currículo Resumido

I am Associate Professor with Habilitation and head of the laboratory of Bioenergetics. I coordinate the group Chemistry for Biological Systems (6 labs) from the research Unit BioISI. I am corresponding author of 45 publications and author of 81 articles. I was Principal Investigator and head of laboratory at ITQB-NOVA. I had 13 research projects funded as principal investigator (over 2M euro), received an Instruct R&D award and I was responsible for a Marie Curie Fellow. I have been frequently invited to present my work at international conferences. I am vice-president of the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department and co-coordinator of the 1st cycle of studies on Biochemistry. I supervised 4 post-Docs, 10 PhD and 6 MSc students as well as over 40 undergraduate and Erasmus students. I integrated the Scientific Advisory Board of the Max Planck Institute for Biophysics. I included the Executive Committee of the European Biophysics Societies’ Association (2011-15). As President of the Portuguese Biophysical Society (2008-15) I took several initiatives to promote biophysics in Portugal and Portuguese affiliated science abroad. I chaired and organized the European Biophysics Congress, EBSA2013 and the European Bioenergetics Conference, EBEC2014. I include the organization committee of FEBS2022. I have been evaluator of Institutions in Germany (MPI) and France (Hcéres) and of projects for NSF (USA), ANR (France) and DFG (Germany), among others and reviewer for several journals. The research in my group focuses on the elucidation of the mechanisms of energy transduction. Energy transduction is the basis of life as all organisms, from prokaryotes to plants and animals, need to acquire energy from the environment and convert it to useful forms for maintenance, growth and reproduction. Specifically, we study the molecular mechanisms of electron transfer, ion translocation and their coupling. Systems that compose our research targets are: respiratory Complex I (CpI), Alternative Complex III (ACIII) and Heme-Copper Oxygen reductases (HCOs) and different monotopic enzymes including the type-II NADH:quinone oxidoreductases, We perform a multidisciplinary approach using a wide range of biochemical and biophysical techniques using different levels of complexity from isolated proteins (wild type and recombinants) to reconstituted proteins in liposomes and membrane vesicles.
