As if they were students, participants will experience at first hand a scientific debate on how to calculate areas and volumes using infinitesimal procedures.
At the end of the debate, we'll analyze the reasons why this method is particularly well-suited to teaching threshold concepts to large audiences.
We'll also spell out the role (and difficulties) for the teacher in the various phases.
Nota: although only teachers who are familiar with integral calculus will be able to take part in the initial debate, teachers who are not specialists in these issues can still take part in the workshop (examples in ethics and foreign language teaching will be given at the end of the workshop).
Autor: Yvan Pigeonnat works in Grenoble Institute of Technology. Half of his time is spent teaching mathematics, the other half as a pedagogical consultant in his institution's pedagogical support structure. In this capacity, he organizes teacher training workshops on a variety of topics, such as the method of scientific debate with students.
