The clastic sediments and rocks have a composition controlled by a complex group of parameters operating during pre- and post-burial processes. The principal pre-burial processes are pedogenesis, due to chemical weathering, erosion, transport and deposition, whereas post-burial processes are influenced by geothermal and geobaric gradients and the pore fluids chemistry operating during diagenesis. These factors are not indipendent but interrelated. Thus, processes controlling the composition of clastic sediments constitute a dynamic system that mus be considered as whole.
