Responsible AI - Imagining a future where AI is developed ethically and sustainably

Sala 6.3.27, Ciências ULisboa

Por Leon Ingelse (Dots & Lines).

AI systems are increasingly adopted in our daily lives. However, their broad application does not imply a broad understanding of societal implications. The adversarial effects are various: bias in AI systems deepens the marginalisation of vulnerable groups, deepfakes and automated trolling endanger our democracies, and the energy-costly development of AI further threatens the environment. Algorithmic transparency and interpretability, tighter regulation, more assertive policy, and increased awareness are key to preventing risks and using AI to its full potential.
Responsible AI aims to develop and use AI systems while considering ethics and sustainable practices. In this presentation, I will introduce Responsible AI and some key social issues related to data science and AI systems, such as their strain on privacy and democratic values, the hidden exploitation and environmental toll, and the AI regulation field.

Short bio: Leon Ingelse obtained a BSc in Mathematics from the University of Amsterdam and an MSc in Data Science from the University of Lisbon. After his thesis, he stayed at the University of Lisbon to research Genetic Programming with Prof. Alcides Fonseca. Recognising the adversarial effects of AI, he decided to switch to the social side of AI and computer technologies. He currently works as a Researcher and Writer for the Croatian AI startup Dots & Lines. In his free time, he writes opinion pieces on tech and society.
