In 2024, CIÊNCIAS remains at the top of scientific performance in its areas of activity, with research and education based on scientific knowledge.

In line with the best international governance practices, the Faculty has an External Advisory Board, whose mission is to evaluate its activities in a national and international context, proposing measures to strengthen institutional performance and competitiveness.

The members of this Board are internationally renowned experts with no ties to the Faculty of Sciences or the University of Lisbon. Several members of this advisory body have recently been awarded prizes and distinctions, which reinforce its prestige and excellence.

Sierd Cloetingh, distinguished professor at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands and former president of the Academia Europaea, the European Association for Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) and the European Research Council (ERC), was recently elected Foreign Corresponding Member of the Lisbon Academy of Sciences.

Michael Hall, a cell biology expert at the Biozentrum center for molecular and life sciences at the University of Basel in Switzerland, has been awarded the 2024 Balzan Prize. The award was given by the International Balzan Foundation for his groundbreaking discoveries in understanding the molecular mechanisms that regulate cell growth and aging. The prize, worth 750,000 Swiss francs (about €800,000), was presented at a ceremony attended by Italian President Sergio Mattarella.

Irene Fonseca, professor of Mathematics and director of the Center for Nonlinear Analysis at Carnegie Mellon University in the United States, was included by Forbes Portugal magazine in the list of the Most Powerful Women in Business, ranking fourth in the Education and Science category.

In addition to the elements already mentioned, the Swedish physicist and nanotechnology expert Lars Montelius is also part of CIÊNCIAS Advisory Board.

CIÊNCIAS is pleased to have the support of this internationally prestigious Committee, whose achievements and recognitions reinforce the excellence of the Advisory Board. Their dedication and experience are fundamental to guide our strategy and boost the institution's competitiveness.
