I have a degree in Biology from the University of Lisbon (Portugal, 1995) and a PhD in "Evolutionary and Developmental Biology" from the University of Leiden (the Netherlands, 2002; supervision of Prof. PM Brakefield). I did post-doctoral work in "Evolutionary Genomics" at the University of California at Irvine (USA, 2003-2005; supervision of Prof. AD Long). I was appointed tenure-track Assistant Prof. at the Institute of Biology Leiden University in 2005, was tenured in 2009, and was promoted to Associate Prof. in 2010. I became a resident PI at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC, in Portugal) between 2012 and 2019, and obtained a CNRS PI position to work at Toulouse University (France, 2016-2019). I became an Assistant Prof. at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon in 2019, integrated its CE3C (Center for Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Changes) research unit in 2020, and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2024. My research combines concepts and approaches from evolutionary and developmental biology, as well as ecology, to explore the genetic basis of intra-specific variation and inter-species diversity in complex traits.
