Currículo Resumido

After a degree in Biology from the University of Lisbon (1995, average grade 18/20), I did an extra-curricular research internship (ERASMUS program) in France (Univ Paris 6 and Univ Montpellier 2) on "Evolutionary Ecology", under the supervision of Dr. Y Michalakis and Prof. I Olivieri. In 1996, I was selected for the "Biology and Biomedicine" Ph.D. Program of the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC), and, after one year of classes, I started my Ph.D. research work on "Evolutionary and Developmental Biology" at the University of Leiden, in the Netherlands (FCT fellowship), under the supervision of Prof. PM Brakefield. I graduated in 2002 with cum laude honors, corresponding to the thesis being judged by an international panel to be in the top 5%. For my thesis work, I was awarded a prize from Leiden University (Kok prize) and one from the European Society for Evolutionary Biology (ESEB; John Maynard-Smith prize). In 2002, I started a post-doc with Prof. AD Long at the University of California at Irvine (EMBO fellowship and NSF grant) on "Evolutionary Genomics". I was appointed tenure-track Assistant Prof. at the Institute of Biology Leiden University in 2005, was tenured in 2009, and was promoted to Associate Prof. in 2010. In 2012, I left my Leiden University position to become a resident PI at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência (IGC). My salary was obtained via competitive calls sponsored by the Portuguese funding agency FCT: programs Ciência (2009-2014) and Investigador FCT (2014-2019). In Feb 2016, after a maternity leave, I started a position as a researcher with the French CNRS, and was tenured in 2017. I continued to work at the IGC, a CNRS "international associated lab", while awaiting for conditions to establish my research program in France. For personal reasons, the move to France became compromised and in Apr 2019, I started a position as an Assistant Prof. at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL), where I hope to continue my research along teaching duties. In Feb. 2020, I integrated FCUL's research unit cE3c (Center for Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Changes) but remained associated to the IGC awaiting for the transfer of my research program to FCUL. This transition has been delayed by constraints during the covid-19 pandemics. ************************* My research combines concepts and approaches from evolutionary and developmental biology, as well as ecology, to explore the genetic basis of intra-specific variation and inter-species diversity in complex traits. As a PI, I have obtained competitive funding for my research projects and salary, and have supervised a number of researchers at different levels, including six post-doctoral fellows (one current), nine PhD theses (two on-going; list in CiênciaVitae), and over 20 MSc theses (list in FCT-Sig cv). My publications include research and (invited) review papers, book chapters and book reviews, as well as published protocols and abstracts presented in international congresses. This work has been highlighted in the scientific press (e.g. Faculty 1000, eLife) and generalist media (e.g. Público, TSF), and has earned her recognition from the scientific community (e.g. integration in scientific committees and journal editorial panels, invited seminars and PhD/promotion jury duties).
