Amélia Pilar Rauter, Full Professor, has her Habilitation at Faculdade de Ciências, Universidade de Lisboa (FCUL) in 2002 and her Ph.D. at Institut für Organische Chemie, Technische Universität Graz, Austria in 1982 under supervision of Prof. Dr. Hans Weidmann in the area of carbohydrate chemistry, in particular on branched hexuronolactones. As assistant professor at this University, she carried out her research on pseudo-C-nucleosides for one more year after promotion to Doktor der Technischem Wissenschaft, stated equivalent to Ph.D by the Technical University of Lisbon in 1984, when she started her carrier as Lecturer of the Faculty of Sciences, University of Lisbon. She was the founder of the Portuguese Society of Chemistry Carbohydrate Chemistry Group inn 1992, and the founder (2001) and leader of the CQB Carbohydrate Chemistry Group – FCUL, a centre of excellence of the ESF network Euroglycoforum (2009-2014), and Executive of its Interest Group Glycochemistry. Presently, she is the leader of the CQE Carbohydrate Chemistry Group. She is the President of the International Carbohydrate Organisation, the VIce-President of IUPAC Division of Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry and the Secretary of the European Carbohydrate Organization. She is also the Coordinator of the Reference Site “Lisbon Ageing Well”, approved in January 2020 by the European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing. She also serves IUPAC as Titular Member of Division of Chemical Nomenclature and Structure Representation and Associate Member of the Interdivisional Committee on Terminology, Nomenclature and Symbols. Dedicated to the areas of organic chemistry and carbohydrate chemistry, she belongs to international advisory/editorial boards of various journals, e.g. European Journal of Organic Chemistry, Russian Journal of Bioorganic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, Marine Drugs, Journal of Carbohydrate Chemistry, Pharmaceuticals, and is Editor in Chief of its section Biopharmaceuticals. She relaunched the book series “Carbohydrate Chemistry – Chemical and Biological Approaches” - Royal Society of Chemistry, serving as Editor since 2008. Her research focuses on design and synthesis of new carbohydrate related small molecules for the prevention or treatment of diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases and infection. Her research falls within the global objective of developing a creative and sustainable chemistry for a better health.


Interesses Científicos

Os interesses científicos recaem na área da Química Orgânica e Biomolecular e dedicam-se à conceção e síntese de novas moléculas líder de estrutura derivada de hidratos de carbono e atuando com novos mecanismos de ação. Cobrem também o isolamento e caraterização estrutural dos princípios ativos de plants e de recursos marinhos. A sua investigação conduziu à descoberta de moléculas líder para a diabetes, para doenças degenerativas (doença de Alzheimer, doença de Prion, cancro) e para infeções.


Scientific Interests

Scientific interests rely mainly within the area of Organic and Biomolecular Chemistry. They cover the design and synthesis of new leads based on carbohydrate structures with new mechanisms of action, as well as isolation and structure elucidation of active principles from plants/marine resources. This research led to the discovery of lead molecules for diabetes, degenerative diseases (Alzheimer´s and Prion diseases, cancer) and infection.
