Ciências is aware of the importance of biodiversity to sustainability, which is especially relevant in urban areas. Biodiversity underpins ecosystem functions and services, such as climate regulation, flash flood prevention and services associated to human health and wellbeing.
Most campus biodiversity can be found in its blue and green infrastructure, which comprises 29% of the campus area. This includes the green areas, the urban allotments, the green roofs and more recently the FCULresta and its temporary pond.
Taking into account the importance of native species, Ciencia's has been keen in planting local species. Many trees scatted around the campus are tagged and it's also important to highlight the FCULresta, composed entirely of native species.
Ciências green areas have been used in teaching in Biology, to monitor annual variations per plant species. The +Biodiversidade@Ciências has been sampling all taxa within the campus and its surrounding, having registered over 500 species in a citizen science project.
