Call for Expressions of Interest for Visiting Assistant Professor (Probability and Statistics)

PhDs in Probability and Statistics, and related areas, are invited to express their interest in a full-time Visiting Assistant Professor position for the second semester of the 2025/2026 academic year at the Department of Mathematical Sciences of the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in teaching introductory courses in Probability and Statistics, with added value if they have been responsible for the course unit.

Interested parties should apply to the email address nucleoc6@ciencias.ulisboa.pt by 31 December 2025, attaching their Curriculum Vitae, proof of qualifications, a cover letter/letter of motivation and at least one letter of recommendation. Interviews may be conducted.

In accordance with Article 10 of the General Regulations for the Recruitment of Specially Contracted Teaching Staff at the University of Lisbon, a selection panel will select the candidate to be hired. In accordance with the same article, the selection panel may decide that none of the candidates has a curriculum vitae suitable for the duties to be performed. 

 

Call for Expressions of Interest for Assistant Professor Positions

The Department of Mathematical Sciences (DCM) develops teaching, research, and innovation activities that integrate theory and practice, with a strong focus on the rigorous solution of real-world problems. The disciplinary areas and specific research domains can be consulted here.

The DCM is undergoing a period of renewal and seeks highly qualified and motivated academics and researchers who are enthusiastic about teaching and eager to contribute to the mission of the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa.

We offer excellent working conditions, including:

  • Modern and spacious facilities;
  • A comprehensive library and electronic access to scientific journals;
  • An individual or shared office (two faculty members per office);
  • Integration into one of the research centers associated with the department;
  • Participation in interdisciplinary and innovation projects in collaboration with industry partners.
  • Teaching duties will include both core undergraduate courses and specialized courses at the Bachelor’s and Master’s levels.

Candidate Profile

In the coming months, the Faculty expects to open Assistant Professor positions in the DCM in disciplinary areas yet to be defined. Expressions of interest are invited from candidates holding a PhD in Mathematics in one or more of the relevant scientific areas specified above.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Quality and relevance of scientific output;
  • Postdoctoral and/or international experience;
  • Teaching experience;
  • Ability to teach in Portuguese within one year (for international candidates).

Expression of Interest Procedure

Interested candidates should send their expression of interest to nucleoc6@ciencias.ulisboa.pt, including:

  • A Curriculum Vitae in English, with contact information for at least two referees;
  • A Teaching Statement (maximum 1 page);
  • A Research Statement (maximum 1 page, excluding references), indicating disciplinary areas and specific research domains.

The call for expressions of interest is open on a rolling basis, and several positions are expected to be opened in the coming months. Candidates who submitted an expression of interest more than 12 months ago are kindly asked to renew their application by resubmitting updated documentation.
