Mission

The Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (Ciências ULisboa) is an institution dedicated to the creation, transmission, and dissemination of scientific and technological knowledge. It fosters a culture of lifelong learning, valuing critical thinking and intellectual autonomy.

Its mission is to conduct research and teaching, promote knowledge transfer and innovation in the fields of exact and natural sciences and technosciences, as well as to disseminate and share cultures, encouraging a constant openness to civil society.

Principles

Ciências ULisboa is guided by principles of intellectual freedom and respect for academic ethics, the recognition and promotion of merit, the social and economic valorization of knowledge, and the encouragement of innovation.

Structure

Faculty Bodies

CIÊNCIAS has management bodies that comply with national legislation and closely follow its internal statutes. In addition to the Board of Directors, the School Board, the Scientific Board, and the Education Board are also periodically elected to operate across the various dimensions of institutional management, teaching, and research. Conversely, the Management Board, which is chaired by the Faculty Dean, oversees the material operating conditions of the Faculty.

Departments

The academic activities at CIÊNCIAS are organized around academic departments that operate across seven fields of knowledge. Each of these seven departments has a chair and collegial bodies that oversee and define activities related to undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral programs, as well as maintain relationships with the associated research centers located on campus.

Service Units

All academic and scientific activities are supported by service units staffed with qualified professionals. These service units include teams responsible for the computer network, various administrative procedures and requirements, external relations, and social support services, among many other areas of activity.
