Faculty Dean

The Dean is the Faculty’s governing body and its representative to external bodies, and is elected by the School Council.

Conceição Freitas

SHORT BIO

A Graduate, Master’s holder, PhD holder, and Associate Professor of Geology at the University of Lisbon, she has built an academic career of recognized merit in the fields of coastal geology, geomorphology, and environmental geosciences, with a substantial body of scientific work, participation in national and international projects, and the supervision of numerous master’s and PhD students. Throughout her career, she has been continuously involved in teaching at all levels of study, making a decisive contribution to postgraduate education and the scientific development of the Faculty.

In addition to her scientific and teaching work, she has extensive experience in academic and institutional management. She was Head of the Department of Geology, coordinator of research units and, more recently, President of the Scientific Board of the Faculty of Sciences.

The Dean is assisted by a maximum of five Vice-Deans, chosen from among the faculty and PhD researchers, whom she freely appoints and dismisses, and to whom she may delegate powers.

António Casimiro
Budget and Infrastructure Area

SHORT BIO

Associate Professor in the Department of Informatics at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. Throughout his academic and institutional career, he has held various management roles, having chaired the Department of Informatics and served on several faculty bodies, including the Academic Board and the Scientific Board. He also held positions on the management board of LASIGE and on the Executive Committee of the Department of Informatics; he was Director of the Centre for Computer Science — now the IT Services Unit — and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors of FCiências.ID.

Carlos Duarte
Information, Quality and Technology Area

SHORT BIO

Associate Professor in the Department of Informatics at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, where he currently coordinates the Bachelor’s degree programme in Informatics Engineering. He conducts research at LASIGE, leading the Inclusive Human-Computer Interaction research group, with recognised work in the fields of digital accessibility and human-computer interaction. Throughout his career, he served as Vice-Head of the Department of Informatics and as a member of the LASIGE Executive Board, gaining significant experience in academic and scientific management.

Cristina Máguas
Research & Innovation, Internationalisation and External Relations Area

SHORT BIO

A full professor and researcher at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon, she has been Deputy Director of the CHANGE Associated Laboratory since 2021 and of the Tropical College (CTROP) since its inception, and also coordinated the CE3C research unit between 2018 and 2025. Throughout his career, she has held key roles in management and scientific coordination, including the position of Vice-Chair of the Scientific Board of the SmartFarm Colab Collaborative Laboratory.

On the international stage, she distinguished herself as President of the European Federation for Ecology. The experience gained in coordinating research structures, promoting science and innovation, and engaging with national and international partners makes a decisive contribution to the strategic development and to strengthening the institutional profile of the Faculty of Sciences.

José Afonso
Image and Communication Area

SHORT BIO

Researcher in the Department of Physics at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. He was member of the Scientific Board of the Faculty of Sciences until 2025 and is currently President of the Portuguese Astronomical Society (SPA), playing an active role in promoting and representing the national scientific community in this field.

In 2014, he led the process of establishing the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences - IA, which he headed until 2021, playing a key role in shaping its scientific strategy, communications and institutional image. His contribution was essential to the Institute’s establishment and profile within the national and international scientific community, as well as to strengthening its links with society.

Jorge Marques da Silva
Teaching and Educational Innovation Area

SHORT BIO

Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Biology at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon. Throughout his academic and institutional career, he served as Vice-Head of the then Department of Plant Biology and sat on the Executive Committee of the Department of Biology, whilst also serving as a member of the Faculty’s Scientific Board. He is also Co-coordinator of RedeAGRO – the University of Lisbon’s Interdisciplinary Thematic Network for the Agri-Food and Forestry Sectors – helping to strengthen scientific and interdisciplinary cooperation in this strategic area.

At national level, he served as a member of the National Education Council - CNE for ten years and was part of its Coordinating Committee, an experience that gave him an in-depth understanding of the Portuguese and European higher education systems.
