Taking the opportunity of the “Aerosol and Cloud experiments in the Eastern North Atlantic (ACE_ENA)” campaign, which is bringing to the Azores a group of scientists to study processes in the maritime atmosphere, the University of the Azores (through IITAA at the Faculty of Agrarian and Environmental Sciences), the University of Lisbon (through Institute Dom Luiz at the Faculty of Sciences), the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) and the ACE_ENA team offer a 1 week workshop/summer_course on earth-system processes.

Despite their relatively small scales, mountain waves have important impacts on atmospheric dynamics and physics. These impacts can be local, such as the generation of clear-air turbulence (CAT) by wave breaking, downslope windstorms and the formation of rotors in the lee of mountains or hills; or global, such as the deceleration of the mid-latitude circulation, the modulation of temperatures in polar regions, or ozone transport and depletion.
No dia 1 de novembro de 1755 um sismo de grande magnitude e subsequente tsunami atingiram Portugal. Em 1969, um outro sismo de grande magnitude voltou a ocorrer na Margem Continental Portuguesa. Estes dois fenómenos naturais desencadearam uma série de eventos que iriam contribuir para o desenvolvimento da Teoria da Tectónica de Placas. Segundo esta teoria, a superfície da Terra é constituída por grandes placas tectónicas rígidas que se movem umas em relação às outras, sendo que os sismos e uma parte significativa da atividade geológica ocorre nas suas fronteiras.
