Dispositions and Relations

Anfiteatro da FCiências.ID (com transmissão através de Videoconferência)

Por Gil Santos  (CFCUL/GI2).

Dispositional properties may be connected to relations in two main ways. First, dispositions typically manifest themselves through some causal relations. Sugar’s solubility may only be manifested when sugar is immersed in water, for example. Second, dispositions may be said to be relational because they are internally related to, and thus individuated by, their manifestations. In this sense, solubility is related to being dissolved, while fragility is related to being shattered, splintered, ruptured, or cleaved. Only the possession of dispositions by their bearers is traditionally taken as a purely intrinsic matter. In this view, dispositions are possessed independently of any relation which their bearers might have with the outside world. This is precisely the topic I will address. First, I will analyse some arguments supporting this view. Second, I will present some reasons to favour the opposite view.
