I will share details of how we can stimulate intellectual excellence and independent thinking in science. Further I will introduce the new scientific topic of biocosmology, that I founded with Andrew Liddle, Stuart Kauffman and Lee Smolin. Biocosmology is the first attempt to describe living systems using theoretical physics’ tools from a first principles approach. The method allowing us to do so, the TAP equation, is based on the Theory of the Adjacent Possible proposed by MacArthur Prize Stu Kauffman. Short bio: Marina Cortês has done extensive work in cosmology, both in large observational collaborations such as the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, and MS-DESI, and from a purely theoretical perspective. Her work has influenced our understanding of the Universe’s youngest stages-the Cosmic Microwave Background-the mystery of its present acceleration, and especially the fundamental nature of time itself. In 2015 she was awarded the Inaugural Buchalter Cosmology Prize, jointly with Lee Smolin.
