Thinking with Prof. Gabriele Gramelsberger’s philosophy of the digital

Sala 8.2.02, Ciências ULisboa

Reflections of Prof. Gabriele Gramelsberger (RWTH Aachen University) on her book "Philosophie des Digitalen" (2023) will  kickstart our debate in this research seminar on “Philosophies of the Digital” considering various attributes of the digital, as exposed by Gramelsberger including her accounts of deconventionalization, desemantisation, epistemological discrete operationality, deontisation and notational attributions which  impact substitution relations of the digital of phenomenological Life-world phenomena. We want to examine questions of “signature” the way computational entities are coded and interpreted by means of mathematical and logical signs, and of knowledge and experience in the digital sphere, discussing the epistemological and methodological transformations that the digital causes in the sciences and humanities. The digital introduces a new form of operative epistemology, based on computational experimentation, data visualisation and artificial intelligence. Thus, the digital not only challenges traditional concepts of truth, objectivity, subjectivity but as well redefines our social and cultural Life-worlds.

Gabriele Gramelsberger is Professor for Theory of Science and Technology at RWTH Aachen University. Her research topic is the digitalization of science, in particular the introduction of new research methods such as computer simulation and machine learning. In 2018 she founded the Computational Science Studies Lab at RWTH Aachen University. She is a member of the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts and Director of the Kate Hamburger Center c:o/re “Cultures of Research”.

During the session Prof. Gabriele Gramelsberger will speak about her book Philosophie des Digitalen. Zur Einführung. Junius Verlag: Hamburg (2003). The session will be introduced and moderated by Alexander Gerner (CFCUL/RG3).

The conference aims to bring together key experts in the Medical Microwave Imaging (MMWI) field and will include invited talks, presentations and posters of peer-reviewed abstracts and conference papers, and workshops in satellite areas of research that are of interest to MMWI research.
