Granular morphogenesis: from astrophysics to biophysics

Sala 1.4.14, FCUL, Lisboa

Por Troy Shinbrot (Rutgers University).

Abstract: Granular flows are encountered in applications ranging from engineering to astrophysics to biology. In many of these applications, grains spontaneously and unexpectedly form well defined morphologies. In this talk, I will describe a few examples, including the separation of sand and boulders on near earth asteroids, and the emergence of structured patterns in biological cells.

Short Bio: Troy Shinbrot is a professor of Biomedical Engineering at Rutgers University, USA. His PhD dealt with the control of nonlinear dynamical systems, and his research has spanned topics in Chemical Engineering, Astrophysics and Biology. He founded the Gordon Research Conference on Granular Flow, he was the founding editor of Physical Review Applied, and he is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and the American Physical Society.
