Purely elastic instabilities of complex fluids at the microscale

Sala 1.3.20, Ciências ULisboa

Por Manuel Alves (CEFT/ALiCE, Departamento de Engenharia Química, Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, Portugal).

The nonlinear rheological behaviour of viscoelastic fluid flows frequently results in complex and counterintuitive behavior and, above critical conditions, instabilities can emerge even in the creeping flow regime. This presentation provides a comprehensive overview of purely elastic flow instabilities that typically emerge at the microscale, and numerical methodologies used in their simulation. We present an overview of the governing equations and numerical techniques employed in their discretization, focusing on the High-Weissenberg number problem. The presentation also provides an overview of the capabilities of the rheoTool library [1], which was developed to model complex fluid flows in openFOAM(R), a widely used open-source CFD software.
