Romana Santos is Associate Professor at the Science Faculty of the University of Lisbon (FCUL), Principal Investigator at MARE – Marine and Environmental Sciences Center, and Innovation Manager at TWIN2PIPSA Horizon EU Twinning Project. Has +25y of experience in marine bioadhesion with a focus in developing nature-inspired biocompatible wet adhesives for biomedical and biotechnological applications. Graduated in Marine Biology at Lisbon University in 2000 and completed the PhD in Biological Sciences in 2005 at Mons University (Belgium). Performed her Master and PhD thesis at the Laboratory of Marine Biology and Biomimetism of Mons University (Belgium). Was awarded an Erasmus grant for the Master and a FCT grant for the PhD. In 2006 pursued a Pos-doc at the Laboratory of Mass Spectrometry at ITQB – Nova University. In 2009, was appointed Auxiliary Researcher (FCT Ciência 2008 - Starting Grant) at the Biomedical and Oral Sciences Research Unit, School of Dentistry, University of Lisbon (Portugal). In 2017, was appointed Principal Investigator (FCT IF 2015 Development Grant) at MARE, Science Faculty, University of Lisbon. Lectures since 2009, having taught 11 Curricular Units of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycles. Leads the Bioadhesion and Biomimicry Research Group (http://bioadhesion.rd.ciencias.ulisboa.pt) and was Vice-President and Member of the Management Committee of 2 COST Actions; and member of 2 international and 3 national scientific societies. Published 36 papers in international peer-reviewed journals, 8 book chapters and edited of 1 book. Has a H-Index of 22 (SCOPUS in 10/2025). In 2018 received the Adhesion Innovation Award. Coordinated 6 R&D Projects (3 national and 4 international), participated as a team member in 9 R&D Projects (8 national and 1 international). Supervised 1 Post-Doctorate, 3 PhD, 11 MSc degrees. Participated in COHITEC 2013 program for technology transfer and commercialization by COTEC. Co-inventor of an international patent (WO2016198950A3). Founding partner of the company Biomimetx S.A., a spin-off of FCUL which raised +3.5M€, being awarded with two prizes and the European Commission Seal of Excellence.
