The biosphere-atmosphere interactions mediate the largest exchanges in the global carbon cycle. Understanding the role of climate and other environmental factors on the carbon cycle of terrestrial ecosystems is key for assessing vulnerabilities and future feedback into the climate system. Supported by global observation-derived fields we investigate the importance of the climate variability in the carbon cycle and contrast observations and model behavior.

Currently, group leader in the Department for Biogeochemical Integration
at the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry. Main research interests
focus on dynamics of terrestrial ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles,
on model-data fusion approaches and model evaluation and development,
and remote sensing of vegetation.
