Abstract: In recent years, citizen science has proven to be a very powerful tool. An ordinary person, with a developed interest in nature, can contribute to a dynamic system of data collection, allowing for the creation of wide and robust datasets, both in space and time, which were previously unattainable. This project intends to take advantage of hundreds of observations submitted onto BirdTrack and the Nest Record Scheme, by casual birdwatchers daily, to better study the breeding phenology of a host of Afro-Palearctic migrant birds, in the United Kingdom. The two databases will be used to estimate the gap between arrival and the breeding onset, a measure hard to obtain, which has been overlooked in most past studies. Obtaining estimates of the gap will allow to see its variation with latitude and if it correlates with breeding success. By delving into this aspect, we might unfold an important mechanism that could be affecting bird populations across the UK, and possibly explain current downward population trends.
