The increasing number of studies on Iberian mountain lakes depicted a wide spectrum of spatiotemporal variability in climate and environmental conditions for the last 2000 years. However, the lack of archives from the western region hampers a detailed understanding of the effect of major climate forcings through different periods. Serra da Estrela covers a key area between two different climatic zones and constitutes a major barrier to Atlantic air masses coming from the Atlantic Ocean. This study presents preliminary results based on the most recent sediments of Lake Peixão. Sediments show evidence of a remarkable influence of solar variability via the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), changes were recorded on the n-alkane signal, reinforcing the sensitive nature of alpine ecosystems and extending the spatial coverage of the Iberian paleoclimate studies.
