LIFE DUNAS: a multidisciplinary project for climate change adaptation in Porto Santo

Transmissão através de Videoconferência

Speaker: Ana Nobre Silva (Instituto Dom Luiz).

Abstract: The coastal dunes of Porto Santo Island stand a unique ecosystem in the entire Madeira archipelago. This vital ecosystem, particularly for a tourism-based economy as Porto Santo, is increasingly being threatened by climate change-related extreme weather events and sea level rise. LIFE DUNAS project plans the restoration of the disrupted dune ridge to increase the resilience of the dune system to climate change impacts, through nature-based solutions. In this regard, a wide range of disciplines from earth and life sciences, agriculture and culture to coastal management and environmental policies, will join forces to increase the long-term sustainability of the Porto Santo dunes, under the LIFE Program for Climate Change Adaption.
