This lecture will briefly sketch the life of Hernando Colón - illegitimate younger son of the explorer, companion and first biographer of his father, and builder of perhaps the most ambitious library project of the early modern age - before going on to consider Hernando's obsessions in context. Hernando replicated his father's curious blend of mercantile pragmatism and obsessive millenarianism, and his projects abound with insights about the contours of early modern information flows and the challenges they presented to attempts to gather and order the world.

Edward Wilson-Lee is 1596 Fellow and Lecturer at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. His work focuses on the history of books, travel and ideas, and he is the author of several books, most recently a biography of Hernando Colón (‘The Catalogue of Shipwrecked Books’, 2018) and a study of his extraordinary library, co-authored with José María Pérez Fernández (‘Hernando Colón’s New World of Books’, forthcoming 2020).
