Hydrodynamic instabilities

Sala 1.4.14, FCUL, Lisboa

Por Pedro Patrício (CFTC, ULisboa).

Rayleigh-Bénard convection patterns, developed when fluids are heated from below, have inspired a large number of studies in nonlinear dynamics, involving transitions between stable configurations, strange attractors and chaos, the mathematical expression of turbulent phenomena.

In this seminar, in addition to Rayleigh-Bénard instabilities, we intend to describe the instabilities that occurr in Taylor-Couette flows, in which the fluid is rotating between two concentric cylinders with different velocities, and in Poiseuille flow, in which the fluid moves inside a horizontal tube with a pressure gradient.

The instabilities lead sometimes to nontrivial-surprising configurations, sometimes directly to the turbulent regime.
