The team is made up of psychologists who provide support to the entire Faculty community (i.e. students, teachers and non-teaching staff).
GAPsi can help in the following three areas:
Clinical Psychology Appontments
Educational Psychology Appointments and Vocational Counselling
Special Educational Needs Status
1. Clinical Psychology Appontments
Clinical intervention is the Office's core area of activity, and it endeavours to respond to a wide range of requests.
It can help with anxiety (at assessments or in different contexts), phobias and panic attacks, depression, low self-esteem, academic demotivation, relationship difficulties, emotional issues, sleep disorders, sexuality issues, social isolation, among other issues.
2. Educational Psychology
Appointments and Vocational Counselling
This area provides support in optimising academic achievement and success, as well as support in developing life/career plans.
It can help with learning problems (e.g. school failure, study methods, procrastination, motivation), interpersonal adjustment (e.g. bullying, harassment), promoting health and well-being (e.g. good sleeping habits, physical exercise) and vocational guidance (e.g. developing a life project; decision making; professional integration; making alternatives known).
3. Special Educational Needs Status
The Special Educational Needs Status applies to students on any of the study programmes. It encompasses students ‘with disabilities or incapacities considered in medical terms to be organic disorders, attributable to organic pathologies, for example, associated with sensory, motor or neurological deficiencies’, as well as with ‘behavioural or emotional disorders or specific learning difficulties’ (Regulamento do Estudante com Necessidades Educativas Especiais da Universidade de Lisboa).
GAPsi is responsible for referring situations that fall under this status. To apply for this, you must request an appointment for an assessment. After the consultation and once the status has been validated, measures can be applied to adapt to the specific needs of each student.
For more detailed information on the support provided in the Faculty of Sciences, see the ‘Students with Special Educational Needs’ area.
