PhD Support Programme

The Faculty of Sciences (CIÊNCIAS) has around 500 doctoral students who carry out their research activities within the scope of the R&D Centers (CI&D) under the responsibility of a supervisor.

Doctoral Program coordinators are responsible for monitoring the progress of their respective doctoral students, approving the Advanced Training Course (CFA) and participating in the juries of the annual research seminars.

CIÊNCIAS increasingly feels the need to support this student population in a more integrated way during their time at the School. The European Union recommends, in fact, that teaching and research institutions assume this responsibility with high priority.

In this context, CIÊNCIAS implemented the PhD Support Programm. which, with a frequency intended to be annual, includes training offers of a non-scientific nature depending on student demand.

The PhD Support Program consists of six components:

  1. Welcome Session

  2. Career Strategy Program

  3. PhD Countdown Program

  4. ScienceIN2Business

  5. Personalized Support

  6. Soft Skills Program

All components of the PhD Support Program are optional. This program does not replace the Doctoral Programs in operation and only makes available to doctoral students components that already exist (with the exception of 1 and 2) based on their needs and interests. Components 3 and 5 are now available to CIÊNCIAS PhD students. Component 4 is available to all CIÊNCIAS students regardless of the study cycle. Some component 6 modules are included in some Doctoral Programs, but other modules may be created specifically within the scope of the PhD Support Program.

The PhD Support Program is essentially an annual plan of activities, which complements the reception and scientific support of students in the respective R&D Centers and/or Departments, aiming to respond to the needs felt by some.

Welcome

Welcome Session: Welcome session held at the beginning of each edition of the PhD Support Program, for doctoral students. Its objective is to make known, in an integrated way, the faculty, its research units, the functioning of Doctoral Programs, the various regulations that may be relevant to doctoral students, as well as the places where academic and R&D relebant information can be found. The remaining components that make up the PhD Support Program are also presented.

Career Strategy Programme

CCareer Strategy Programme: Includes two main modules, the Self Assessment (Personality and activity preferences assessment; Interests, values and Skills inventories; Strengths and peer assessment; Transition to career exploration), and the Job Search Tools (Career planning, network strategies & Linkedin profile; Guide to writing a professional and powerful resume). The Career Strategy Program has in-person and online components, and includes workshops, group work sessions, personalized individual work sessions and independent work. The Career Strategy Program also includes networking events with guests from different scientific areas. The program is designed for 15 to 28 participants, organized into working groups. Participants can attend this program in any year of the doctorate, and it is natural that the perception of the usefulness of the Career Strategy Program is higher in the last years.

PhD Countdown Programme

PhD Countdown Programme: Oriented towards students in the final stages of their doctorate, seeking to help students mobilize all their resources to achieve an approaching end, in a process for which not everyone is psychologically well prepared. The program contents are organized sequentially, with each student initially building a personal itinerary with objectives to achieve, giving subsequent sessions tools to optimize this itinerary. It takes the form of 10 sessions, one per week, for groups of 10 to 15 participants.

Soft Skills Programme

Soft Skills Programme: Structure of independent modules, including topics such as Ethics in Science, Bioethics, Scientific writing, Science communication. Some modules may have variants depending on the scientific area or may only be relevant to some. Each module is organized in the form of workshops. Participants will choose, each year, the modules they consider most relevant, and it is recommended that they be taken in the first years of the doctorate. Modules can be organized in collaboration with R&D Centers or within the scope of CIÊNCIAS Doctoral Programs.
