Admission requirements:

The following may apply for the 2nd Cycle of Master's studies:

  • Holders of a bachelor's degree or legal equivalent. Legal equivalents to a bachelor's degree are considered to be the equivalencies and recognitions of qualifications awarded under Decree-Law No. 283/83 of 21 June (repealed), Decree-Law No. 341/2007 of 12 October (repealed) and recognitions requested under Decree-Law No. 66/2018, of 16 August, regulated by Ordinance No. 33/2019, of 25 January, amended and republished by Ordinance No. 43/2020, of 14 February;

  • Holders of a foreign higher education degree awarded following a 1st Cycle of studies organised in accordance with the principles of the Bologna Process by a State adhering to this Process;

  • Holders of a foreign higher education degree that is recognised as satisfying the objectives of a bachelor's degree by the Scientific Council of the school where they wish to be admitted;

  • Holders of an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognised as attesting to their ability to complete this cycle of studies by the Scientific Council of the school where they wish to be admitted.

Please note: The validity of the above degrees must be confirmed by the competent authority in the country where the qualification was obtained. When issued by institutions in non-EU countries, they must be legalised by a Portuguese consular agent or by the Hague Apostille, with these legalisations being carried out in the country of origin of the documents. Whenever they are not issued in Portuguese, English, French or Spanish, they must be officially translated into one of these languages.

Admission requirements:

To be admitted to a 2nd Cycle of studies, international students must:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the subjects necessary to pursue studies in the course to which they are applying;

  • Prove that they have the language skills required to attend the course to which they are applying.

Application submission instructions

1. Account creation

SCIENCE student applicants with a valid account - must enter their SCIENCE student account details and password at https://fenix.ciencias.ulisboa.pt/ and then access the application form in the ‘Applicant’ section.

SCIENCE student applicants without a valid account (applicants who are not currently enrolled in SCIENCE study cycles) - must access https://balcaoc.ciencias.ulisboa.pt/servico/criar-conta-utilizador to reactivate their account. Automatic account reactivation uses your mobile phone number and/or personal email address. If these contact details are not in our systems or are out of date, you will need to request activation directly at the IT Services Department counter (room 1.2.10). You can then access the application form in the ‘Candidate’ section.

Candidates who are not CIÊNCIAS students - you must create an account directly at https://fenix.ciencias.ulisboa.pt/accountCreation.

You will then receive your credentials (format: User bennuXXX ) and will be able to access the application form https://fenix.ciencias.ulisboa.pt/ in the ‘Candidate’ section.

If you do not receive the email or forget your password, you can request it to be resent at https://fenix.ciencias.ulisboa.pt/passwordResetRequest.

2. Choose the course you wish to apply for.

3. Fill in and validate all the fields in the application ‘tabs’.

4. Gather the necessary and mandatory documents, namely:

  • Curriculum Vitae;

  • Bachelor's Degree 1 2 3 or legal equivalent 4;

  • Certificate of Bachelor's Degree Course Units 1 2 3;

  • Certificate of Course Load and Syllabus (stamped and signed by the higher education institution) 2 3 (only for candidates whose Bachelor's Degree or legal equivalent is from a Higher Education institution in a country outside the European Union or a country not participating in the Bologna Process);

  • Sworn statement that the candidate does not have Portuguese nationality and is not covered by any of the conditions which, according to the EEI, do not grant them the status of International Student (see Article 3 of Decree-Law No. 36/2014 of 10 March, in its consolidated version) - see Draft;

  • Declaration regarding the recognition of the foreign higher education institution and foreign higher education degree, issued by the Directorate-General for Higher Education - DGES in Portugal (only for candidates whose degree or legal equivalent is from a higher education institution in a country outside the European Union or a country not participating in the Bologna Process);

  • Identification document: Passport, Foreign Citizen Card (optional; or when authorised, a simple photocopy of the document) 3;

  • Letter of motivation;

  • Proof of knowledge of English or Portuguese (if applicable) - Certificates of completion of an English/Portuguese course or a statement proving attendance at a higher education course taught in English/Portuguese are accepted as supporting documents.

3 Applicants must bring the original documents at the time of enrolment/registration.

4 Degrees recognised under Decree-Law 66/2018 of 16 August, as well as degrees that have been recognised or considered equivalent under previous legislation (Decree-Law No. 283/83 of 21 June and Decree-Law No. 341/2007, of 12 October).

5. Scan and attach all mandatory documents to the application. Please send scanned documents in Word, PDF or image formats (e.g. jpeg, gif, png, etc.).

Applications that do not include all the mandatory documents will be excluded.

6. Submit the application.

7. Wait for an email with the payment details for the application fee of €60.00 and make the payment.

Payment must be made by:

  • Bank transfer. Payments must be made solely and exclusively during the application phase (payments made during the first phase to pay for applications submitted in the second phase will not be accepted).

8. After making the bank transfer for the application fee, you must submit proof of payment with your application by uploading it to the BANK TRANSFER tab of the application.

Throughout the application process, applicants will receive email notifications and will be able to check the status of their application.

After publication of the results

Payment of deposit

As stipulated in Order D/20/2024, after being notified of their admission, candidates admitted in the 1st and 2nd phases are required to pay a deposit of €500.00, under penalty of losing their place on the course to which they have been admitted, within a maximum period of 5 days following the publication of the results of each application phase. The deposit amount will be deducted from the tuition fee.

Payment instructions:

  • Access your application on Fénix (https://fenix.ciencias.ulisboa.pt/)

  • In the application, click on the ‘Generate Deposit Payment’ option

  • Go to the ‘Deposit Payment Details’ tab to confirm the amount to be paid (€500)

  • Go to the ‘Bank Transfer - Deposit’ tab to access the bank details

  • Make the payment

  • Upload the proof of payment in the ‘Bank Transfer - Deposit’ tab and submit it.

Once this payment has been made, the amount paid as a deposit will be credited towards the payments due following admission, for enrolment/registration in the respective postgraduate course.

Choice of courses

Candidates who submit more than one application and are admitted to more than one course must, when paying the deposit, without fail and under penalty of not being placed, inform the Postgraduate Studies Area (candidatura-pg@ciencias.ulisboa.pt) of the course they wish to join/enrol in.
