A mini-city

One Within the campus and surrounding area, there is a small town that has been tailor-made for students, with everything from laser surgery to sports and wellness facilities. The University City neighbourhood was built in 1960 and today encompasses around a dozen faculties of the University of Lisbon, as well as private universities in the surrounding area. With over 37,000 students, it is now the largest university city in the country.

Off Campus:

Caleidoscópio – a privileged space for studying, socialising, or organising conferences, lectures, and meetings. Located in Campo Grande, it has an amphitheatre that can accommodate 72 people, a 140 m² exhibition hall, and a study area for 175 people. It is open every day of the year – and only closes for two hours, between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., for daily cleaning. The space is (https://www.ulisboa.pt/info/caleidoscopio)

University Stadium – A stone's throw from CIÊNCIAS, it includes 25- and 50-metre swimming pools that can be used for swimming lessons, water polo and water aerobics. It also includes the Eng.º Vasco Pinto de Magalhães Stadium (or Estádio de Honra), which can be used for football or rugby, as well as for athletics events on a tartan track. It also has three sports pavilions, tennis and padel courts, as well as outdoor playing fields and a fitness circuit. It has a gym and medical centre that prioritises the physical and psychological well-being of students. It has changing rooms, bars and meeting rooms. The complex is only closed on Sundays and public holidays, but each facility may have specific opening hours and schedules. (https://www.estadio.ulisboa.pt)

National Library – Even in times of increasing digitisation, it is an unmissable space for those who research, search for publications from the past, or simply value its tranquillity.

Torre do Tombo – The main collection of documents and testimonies that have been produced over several centuries of national history.

Aula Magna – part of the University of Lisbon's Rectory building, it maintains its educational purposes, but is better known in the city as a venue for shows and conferences.

Jardim do Campo Grande – the city's green refuge and a privileged space for exercise, walks, reading, meetings, and outdoor activities. It has padel courts, bicycle rental stations and a curious path with events associated with the history of world science. It has restaurants and a gym, as well as the Caleidoscópio (see this page).

Estádio de Alvalade – Home to the neighbouring Sporting Clube de Portugal, which allows the practice of different sports, it houses a shopping centre and a supermarket.

Pimenta Palace / City Museum: a must-see for anyone who wants to learn about the history of the capital.

Bordalo Pinheiro Museum – an important collection of ceramics, drawings, engravings, tiles and many other works by the scathing artist who gained fame for his political and social denunciations in the 19th century.
