Branca Edmée Marques, the first Portuguese scientist to hold a chair in chemistry, studied here, as did José Pinto Peixoto, who has played an indispensable role in explaining the water cycle, and José Antunes Serra, a Portuguese pioneer in the study of genetics. Among former students, Virgínia Dignum, UN advisor for Artificial Intelligence (AI); Fernando Carvalho Rodrigues, ‘father’ of the first Portuguese satellite; and Fernando Pereira, who has led Google's AI, stand out. In terms of success stories, the Science4You brand, which began to take shape on the CIÊNCIAS campus, is particularly noteworthy.

CIÊNCIAS participates in 10 strategic scientific infrastructures in the country and houses 13 research and development centres. Each year, SCIENCES produces more than 1,400 scientific publications and raises an average of €12.5 million for different projects and initiatives. Tec Labs – The CIÊNCIAS innovation centre has 30 incubated start-ups. A permaculture garden, an algoteca and a vivarium, the iXLab laboratory that tracks pandemics and biological threats, and laboratories that help develop the world's largest telescopes are among the resources available for study and research.

All our courses are accredited by the Higher Education Assessment and Accreditation Agency for the maximum period allowed and without any conditions.
