Why CIÊNCIAS? 5 reasons to choose CIÊNCIAS

The school of happiness

In CIÊNCIAS, we align atoms, reveal stars and question algorithms, but we always put humans at the centre. In addition to machines and molecules, we help shape people for the future – and we help make dreams come true, in an environment of scientific rigour, a spirit of cooperation and respect for difference. In CIÊNCIAS, everyone can be whatever they want to be. And in the end, we are all CIÊNCIAS.

CIÊNCIAS, with Lisbon at its heart

By metro, bus, bicycle, train, car, scooter or even plane: CIÊNCIAS has a range of easy access options and is just a stone's throw away from the National Library of Portugal, the Campo Grande gardens, Humberto Delgado International Airport, the Caleidoscópio study area, the swimming pool complex and all the sports facilities that make up the University Stadium. Another university residence for more than 1,000 students is due to open soon.

From this University, one can see the whole world.

In CIÊNCIAS, there are students and teachers from every continent – and knowledge of CIÊNCIAS reaches every continent. Among the world's most cited scientists are 28 CIÊNCIAS researchers. Branca Edmée Marques, the first Portuguese scientist to hold a chair in chemistry, studied here, as did José Pinto Peixoto, who has played an indispensable role in explaining the water cycle, and José Antunes Serra, a Portuguese pioneer in the study of genetics. Among former students, Virgínia Dignum, UN advisor for Artificial Intelligence (AI); Fernando Carvalho Rodrigues, ‘father’ of the first Portuguese satellite; and Fernando Pereira, who has led Google's AI, stand out. In terms of success stories, the Science4You brand, which began to take shape on the CIÊNCIAS campus, is particularly noteworthy.
