Cities are struggling with the consequences of global warming, especially during heat waves that are becoming more frequent, intense, and long, turning urban areas into unwelcoming spaces for life, particularly during the summer months, by aggravating undesirable effects such as the urban heat island effect.
Effective nature-based solutions that serve as heat sinks are needed to mitigate these consequences. In addition to anthropogenically released heat and low vegetation density in urban areas, this effect relies on the heat storage capacity of exposed mass.
Therefore, the concepts of thermal comfort and a healthy environment transcend the physical boundaries of buildings, requiring that cities provide solutions to guarantee the liveability of outdoor spaces.
This seminar will present the latest advances in the integration of passive cooling strategies in nature-conditioned buildings and outdoor spaces, alongside the pilot facilities that are being tested.
