Minor
Geographic Information Technologies
The Minor in Geographic Information Technology (GIT) aims to provide training in the field of Geographic Information Sciences, equipping students with basic knowledge in the field of geographic information, as well as a set of basic skills in elementary cartography and topography and geographic information systems.
The growing use of geographic information, of which Google Earth and GPS navigation systems are two examples, has driven the development of Geographic Information Systems, which aim to bring together information technologies in the specific field of georeferenced information in an integrated manner. The content of the subjects that make up the Minor covers the areas of Positioning, Spatial and Geodetic Reference Systems, Topography, Photogrammetry, Cartography and Geographic Information Systems and is part of the curriculum in Geographic Engineering. The subjects offered by the Minor in GIS will allow entry into the second cycle in Geospatial Engineering, in which students acquire skills for the planning, execution and management of projects in the field of Geographic Information, geared towards planning and decision-making about the territory and the production of basic cartography for other areas of engineering, or even the development of GIS applications, with a view to supporting decision-making related to the management of georeferenced spatial information.
