Inspiring generations of students, unravelling the mysteries of life, from genes to ecosystems, so that we can improve society

Would you like to learn about and understand the effects of climate change on terrestrial and marine biodiversity?

At the Department of Biology (DBio) of the prestigious Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (CIÊNCIAS ULisboa), you will find excellent training in these and other areas.

Do you aspire to contribute to food security and the treatment of diseases using biotechnology and artificial intelligence?

At DBio, we continue to inspire generations of students to decipher the mysteries of life, from genes to ecosystems, so that we can improve society.

DBio focuses on dynamic teaching supported by a strong practical component. In addition to classroom training, there are laboratories and field stations equipped with advanced technologies and a vibrant, tolerant academic community that ensures students receive cutting-edge learning through innovative projects.

Are you fascinated by the evolution and adaptation of species and by ecology? Or by microbiology and its applications?

To achieve this, we rely on a solid foundation in the first cycle of Biology, where a common core (years 1 and 2) will provide you with a robust base, allowing you to define your specialization profile (year 3), with a wide range of optional subjects available.

In the second and third cycles, the program maintains its diversity and excellent practical component, supported by research centers that carry out activities in both fundamental and applied biology fields, with a strong international projection. You can find more information about the available options in undergraduate, master's and doctoral programs on the specific pages.

CIÊNCIAS, with over a century of history, is proudly recognized as a national and international reference in Biology teaching and research. Become part of this academic community, where science is lived with passion and rigor, and respond to the challenges of the future, because the 21st century is the era of Biology!
