Tectonic and Metallogeny of the Curaçá Valley Copper Deposits, Neoarchean-Paleoproterozoic of São Francisco Craton, Bahia, Brazil

The Curaçá Valley Copper deposits include Brazil's oldest still-operating copper mine, Caraíba, which has been in continuous production since 1979. They are hosted by Neoarchean ultramafic bodies (pyroxenites and norites) that intrude orthogneiss and metasedimentary rocks of northern São Francisco Craton. The region underwent granulite-facies metamorphism, multiple deformation events, and granitoid intrusion episodes. In the Paleoproterozoic, an IOCG-style alteration system affected the orthomagmatic-mineralized ultramafic rocks, forming hydrothermal copper ore. The region reflects a complex history related to Neoarchean and Paleoproterozoic orogenic events.
