Unit Description

The Centre for Environmental and Marine Studies (CESAM) is a Associated Laboratory from the University of Aveiro including more than 400 researchers carrying out scientific activities under three main research themes:
a) Evaluation of coastal environmental quality;
b) Understanding the coastal and marine ecosystems functioning;
c) Assessing biodiversity and stress processes on biological systems.

The CESAM is organized in nine research Groups one of which from the Faculty of Sciencies of the University of Lisbon - the Adaptation Biology and Ecological Processes Research Group

Scientific Objectives

Through efficient knowledge sharing, the Adaptation Biology and Ecological Processes Research Group (BioEco) aims at exploring innovative research options supporting predictions on the impact of global changes upon species and their habitats. Our research focuses on better understanding adaptive trade-offs arising from changing environmental conditions or modes of life. In particular we are investigating:
a) the effects of natural and man-made environmental changes in the landscape, with particular emphasis on species and habitats holding a conservation status;
b) the adaptations and mechanisms allowing organisms to increase their chances of survival or reproduce;
c) both environmental and endogenous factors involved in animal or human health and disease.
