Statistics and Operational Research

Welcome to the Department of Statistics and Operational Research

The main objectives of the Department of Statistics and Operational Research (DEIO) of the Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade de Lisboa are teaching, developing research activities and knowledge transfer and innovation, focusing essentially in two domains of applied mathematical sciences, Statistics and Operational Research.

DEIO offers a varied and updated training of 1st, 2nd and 3rd Cycle, aiming to ensure a solid background of knowledge and skills, adequate for different professional functions.

The DEIO has a highly qualified academic staff with extensive experience in teaching and innovation, and the ability to raise funds for research at national and international level. The scientific and pedagogical competences of its teachers make it possible to solve, and teach how to solve, real problems that arise in very different domains, such as biology, medicine, pharmacy, health, transport or telecommunications networks, insurance, banking, public services, production companies and, in general, economics and management.

Scientific research at DEIO and knowledge transfer to companies, public or private institutions and to society in general are conducted in close connection with excellent quality research centers funded by FCT - the national funding agency for science, research and technology.

The DEIO has a long tradition and is a reference in the teaching and research of Statistics and Operational Research in Portugal.
